When to See August’s Partial Lunar Eclipse and Sturgeon Moon


Partial Lunar Eclipse Quick Facts

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible across the United States Thursday night into Friday Morning. According to NASA, “96.3% of the Moon’s disk is within Earth’s umbra, the central part of the shadow where the Sun is completely blocked by Earth.”

The partial eclipse will take place from 10:34 pm EDT Thursday night until 1:52 am EDT on Friday morning.  
 
We should be able to see this partial eclipse if the weather cooperates… more on that to come. Partial lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye or through a telescope, so no special glasses needed for this one!


What is a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon. A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon is completely within Earth’s shadow, which can only occur during a full moon. This one, will be a partial lunar eclipse so it will not be fully covered by Earth’s shadow.


August’s Full Moon

The Moon will be at its fullest on August 28 at 12:18 am EDT, coinciding with the lunar eclipse. If you miss it at its peak, the Moon will still appear full from Thursday night through Saturday morning.

The August full moon is traditionally known as the Sturgeon Moon.


Sturgeon Moon Forecast

So, will clouds in Central PA ruin the show? Right now, we could see a storm in spots Thursday night into Friday morning. There will be a better chance to see storms the more east you head. That means, western counties should be able to view it as long as the clouds break and move out.
 
Temperatures Thursday night will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s, so it will be comfortable to view as long as there aren’t any storms around!
